DRAFT, not legal advice. This is a plain-English template. Review it (ideally with a solicitor) before launch and before taking payments.

Who we are

CheckFair is a trading name of Ian McClelland, a sole trader based in the UK. Ian is the "controller" of your personal information. Contact: see contact page. Postal address: [TODO: business postal address]. ICO registration number: [TODO: ICO number once registered].

What we collect right now (waitlist)

  • Your email address, the date and time you joined, and whether you ticked the optional "send me updates" box.
  • Your IP address, held briefly in memory to stop spam and abuse (rate limiting). We don't store it with your email.
  • Standard web server logs (page requested, time, status) for security. We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.

Why we use it, and our lawful basis

  • To tell you when CheckFair launches, because you asked us to (consent).
  • To send occasional updates and tips, only if you ticked the box (consent). You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • To keep the site secure and prevent abuse (legitimate interests).

When checks go live

When we start selling reports we will also process the registration you check, the asking price you enter, your order and payment record (payments handled by our payment provider; we never see your full card number), and the report we create for you. We'll update this notice before then. Reports are kept privately for the person who bought them and never sold or reused for anyone else.

Who we share it with

We don't sell your data. We use a small number of service providers to run CheckFair, such as our web hosting provider [TODO: name VPS provider] and, later, an email delivery provider and a payment provider. When you buy a check, the registration is sent to our vehicle data supplier to produce the report.

How long we keep it

Waitlist emails are kept until launch plus 12 months, or until you ask us to delete them, whichever is sooner. Server logs are kept for up to 30 days.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your information, object to how we use it, or withdraw consent. Email us and we'll respond within one month. If you're unhappy, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or 0303 123 1113.
